Background of the Study
Critical thinking is an essential skill in nursing, enabling practitioners to assess situations, analyze data, and make informed clinical decisions. In an era of increasing complexity in healthcare, nurses must possess strong decision-making abilities to ensure patient safety and quality care (Hassan & Williams, 2023). Critical thinking training involves teaching students analytical reasoning, problem-solving, and evidence-based decision-making skills, which are crucial for effective nursing practice (Adeyemi et al., 2024).
Despite its importance, many nursing students struggle with critical thinking due to rote memorization, passive learning, and a lack of exposure to real-world problem-solving scenarios (Ogundipe et al., 2024). At the Federal University, Dutse, efforts have been made to integrate critical thinking into the nursing curriculum, but challenges such as inadequate training resources and resistance to active learning persist. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of critical thinking training in enhancing nursing students' decision-making abilities and identifying strategies for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Nurses are required to make quick and accurate decisions in high-pressure clinical environments. However, studies indicate that many nursing students lack critical thinking skills, which can lead to errors, poor patient outcomes, and decreased confidence in clinical settings (Brown & Ahmed, 2023). Traditional nursing education often emphasizes memorization over analytical reasoning, leaving students ill-equipped to handle complex patient care situations (Kumar & Bello, 2024).
At the Federal University, Dutse, nursing students face challenges in developing decision-making skills due to limited exposure to case-based learning, inadequate simulation exercises, and a lack of structured critical thinking training. If these issues are not addressed, graduates may enter the workforce without the necessary skills to assess risks, prioritize patient needs, and make sound clinical judgments. This study seeks to determine the impact of critical thinking training on nursing students’ decision-making abilities and propose recommendations for curriculum improvement.
